DeAndra and I ride east on the Sunrise Highway in San Diego County California, San Diego County Highway S-1.

We start east of Mount Laguna, California from CA Highway 79 and follow San Diego S-1 (Sunrise Highway) across Interstate 8 as we make our home in Chula Vista, California.

This was the conclusion of a full day of riding to include picking strawberries in Carlsbad, lunch and pie in Julian, and then back to Chula Vista.

Sunrise Highway (San Diego S-1)

Winding through the rugged backbone of the Peninsular Ranges, Sunrise Highway (State Route S1) offers one of the most dramatic scenic transitions in Southern California. Starting at its northern end near CA-Highway 79 and Lake Cuyamaca, the road begins in a landscape of rolling meadows and historic ranch lands before climbing steadily into the Cleveland National Forest.

As you ascend toward the 6,000-foot heights of Mount Laguna, the open terrain gives way to dense stands of Jeffrey pines and black oaks. The route reaches its peak intensity as it hugs massive escarpments that drop away into the Anza-Borrego Desert, offering dizzying overlooks where the lush forest meets sun-bleached salt flats thousands of feet below. Passing the windswept cliffs of Kwaaymii Point and the Desert View Overlook, the journey concludes with a sharp descent toward the southern base at Interstate 8.
