Day 10 Overview

After raining heavily all night the weather broke in the early morning shortly after sunrise.  With the rain stopped, I quickly took a few photos of Devils Tower shrouded in low clouds, packed up my soggy camp and loaded up Dexter (my 2005 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic) and rolled out of camp eastward to Fisher Grove State Park Campground in South Dakota.

With temperatures hovering around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, this morning’s ride was chilly and damp.  In South Dakota, I had caught up to some of the rain systems that had earlier soaked my camp at Devils Tower.

Total miles for today = 353 Miles, predominantly riding on US Highway 212 most of the way.

The first part of today’s ride was cold and wet.  During my first break, I took a long break at a gas station / coffee shop in South Dakota taking in the hot coffee, nibbling on some pastries and soaking in the warmth.  When it was time to roll out, I changed into my cold weather riding gear and rain gear which kept me comfortable until the next break in Eagle Butte, South Dakota where I was able to shed my rain gear.

The weather was enjoyable for the remainder of the ride today with moderate temperatures and sun kissed skies.

Scenery wise, nothing spectacular with miles of farm fields as far as the eye can see, consisting mostly of corn.  However, much like portions of riding in Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming and southern South Dakota, the remoteness of the area was immense and with it, the incredible peace that comes with this level of solitariness.

Today’s ride ended in Fisher Grove State Park where I set up today’s camp.
