The Redwoods to Minnesota Motorcycle Trip
Before I decided that it would be fun to crash my bike and break my leg on August 5th, I was planning on taking a long motorcycle trip starting in Chula Vista, CA (San Diego) to Minneapolis, MN. The trip was to start on September 1st with the first camping spot south of San Jose, CA. Day 2 would have taken me into the Giant Redwoods near Weott, CA and camping overnight. Day 3 cut east across California camping not to far from Reno, NV. Day 4 was planned to be all slab (I-80) to Salt Lake City, UT with a stay in a motel (have to shower sometime).
Today would have been day 5.
The plan for day 5 was to head north east from Salt Lake City and wind my way through Wyoming taking a few detours to rail-fan (look at choos choos) of coal trains in the Powder River Basin and then camp in Douglas, WY. Planned time to roll into the campsite would have been around 6:00PM or so. Forecast temperature for Douglas, WY at 6PM was 70 degrees F, not too shabby. Then, I looked at the forecast temperature for my planned roll out time from Douglas, WY at 7AM. The temperature forecast for Douglas, WY at 7AM on September 6th, 2017 is freaking icebox temp of 42 degrees F……42 in early September. All I can think of is how frozen I would be even wearing enough layers to look like this poor soul.

Day 5 planned route was to depart Douglas, WY, pit stop at Mount Rushmore, and then proceed east to camp in Pierre, SD arriving in Minneapolis on Day 7 (September 7th). So on this planned epic journey, I would be riding in temps in the 100’s to about 10 degrees north of freezing…yikes :). Maybe next year or 2019.
